All Hail The Panoramic

All Hail The Panoramic

I love panoramic format photography. I always have! One of my first cameras was a Nikon compact that had a slider to change the aspect ratio into a pseudo panorama (it just cropped the top and bottom of the frame) but from that I was hooked. It replicated the way I saw the world and I loved it!

Fast forward to the advent of digital photography and I took to multi-frame panoramas like a duck to water. This gave me the opportunity to really explore the wider view in a way that I had previously been unable to achieve. I loved the aspect ratio used by photographers such as Colin Prior, but film was dead, so there was no real possibility of going down that route.

But film isn’t dead. Film was just on holiday. Now film is back!

Today my DaYi 617 camera arrived. This is the aspect ratio that I have been yearning for, it’s a large format approach that should yield stupendous results! Now I just have to get to grips with it, which will probably take some time!

I hope to have some of my first results up for you in the next week or two! One film has been run through but I think I may do a second roll on location somewhere next week and then send both for processing. I would try myself, but it’s colour film and I already have one learning mountain to climb!
