Description

The lost village of Eskart sits amongst the forestry plantation of Balmacaan above Drumnadrochit.  Very little is visible as most is tucked under a blanket of spruce, but this one cottage stands clear!  I don’t know if the name “Daffodil Cottage” was one that was ever used whilst it was occupied, or whether it has been attributed more recently, but that is what it is known as locally today.  It was occupied beyond the usual clearances up until the Second World War when the population of young workers was sadly diminished by the brutality of conflict.  It was the last home within the once thriving settlement to be abandoned, the land taken over by post-war forestry plantation that still stands over the remaining ruins today.

This is an important place to me, the ruin clearly visible from my front garden across the glen.  It’s character changing with the light and the seasons with views out towards Loch Ness on one side and up into the mountains to the other.
