Capturing the Soul of the Scottish Highlands

Rob Sutherland, The Wayward Spirit

Rob Sutherland is “The Wayward Spirit”, a name adopted from his late brother and used for his Commercial Photography brand, Wayward Spirit Photography.

At heart Rob is a landscape photographer with a passion for the landscape, culture and history of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, the place that he chose to live after the life changing shock of losing his eldest brother at a young age. The reset button was pressed and a lucrative career in engineering was turned away from in order to return home to the north of Scotland.

Rob’s journey in photography has been anything but conventional. He was inspired to pick up a camera by two influential figures: his late brother Neil and his geography teacher, Jim Fisher. Both were free spirits fueled by a sense of adventure—qualities that deeply resonate with Rob’s own life. After mastering the basics, Rob found himself working as an expedition photographer deep in the Amazon, capturing the people, landscapes, and wildlife of the rainforest.

Photography took a backseat when he returned, as he pursued a career in more traditional fields. The loss of Neil was a profound shock that forced Rob to reevaluate his life’s direction. Though he always planned to return to photography, this event shook him to his core and made him realize that life is too short—if not now, then when? With this newfound clarity, Rob relocated his family three hours north from the Lake District to the Highlands, embracing a fresh start as a full-time photographer.

When he’s not capturing stunning landscapes, Rob works as a commercial photographer under the brand Wayward Spirit Photography. He also serves as a Launch Authority for the RNLI station on Loch Ness and lives with his wife and three sons in the hills above Drumnadrochit.

Rob is dedicated to revealing the breathtaking beauty, vibrant culture, and deep history of the Scottish Highlands through fine art photography. His mission is to inspire appreciation for this remarkable region while connecting viewers with its timeless spirit.
